A guide for people, families and referrers
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
FND is my main area of focus. This page explains what FND is in plain language, and what occupational therapy can offer.
What FND is
Functional Neurological Disorder affects how the brain and body send and receive signals. The symptoms are real. FND is diagnosed by a medical specialist.
How FND affects everyday life
FND affects the activities that make up an ordinary day. When symptoms shift from one day to the next, routines, work and time with family are harder to hold steady, and tasks that once felt automatic can take more planning and energy.
Occupational therapy begins from these everyday effects rather than from the diagnosis itself. The starting point is straightforward: what you need to do, what you want to do, and what is getting in the way.
What occupational therapy contributes
Occupational therapy is practical. My work is to help you take part in the activities that matter to you, and to reduce the friction around them. What that looks like depends on your goals, and it can include:
- Sustainable strategies for managing fatigue and pain across the day
- Sensory approaches that help a sensitive nervous system regulate
- Upper limb therapy and motor skill rehabilitation for everyday tasks
- Cognitive and visual-perceptual retraining for concentration and planning
- Practical changes to your home so daily activities are easier to manage
- A planned, supported return to work, study or driving
Throughout, I work alongside your GP, specialists and wider treating team, and I move at a pace that suits you.
What an initial assessment involves
An initial assessment is a conversation. We talk through what is happening for you, what matters most, and what you would like therapy to work toward. From there we agree on goals and a plan together, and decide on the next steps. You do not need a referral to book one.
Support organisations
These independent organisations provide information and support for people affected by FND.
